Fearing U.S. Military Action Against Cartels, Mexico Moves To Reinforce Sovereignty Laws

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum proposed constitutional reforms after the U.S. designated six drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.

The designation, which goes into effect on Thursday , opens the door to further legal action against individuals and networks that aid or abet their operations.

Historically, terrorist designations against criminal syndicates have sparked debates over national sovereignty.
