Remembering Tom Fitzmorris, Tireless Champion of New Orleans’ Unique Culinary Culture

Tom Fitzmorris , who died on 12 February at age 74 , was best known for his long-running talk radio program, The Food Show , and his classic cookbook, New Orleans Food : More than 225 of the City’s Best Recipes to Cook at Home.
His book Hungry Town describes his role in reviving New Orleans after it was nearly erased from the map by Hurricane Katrina .
Tom Fitzmorris was a mentor and friend whom I met while working in New Orleans as a cellist with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra .
He was devastated by the breakup of his family, but felt that New Orleans food culture would become a critical machine to stitch us back together.
As more and more restaurants reopened, along with other attractions and civic amenities, residents and tourists made their way back.
Tom 's own light began to dim even as the city he loved came back online, due to the Alzheimer's affliction.
