A federal appeals court allows President Donald Trump to remove leaders of two independent agencies for now.
The case is expected to eventually make its way to the Supreme Court , where the justices could weigh in on Trump ’s expansive view of presidential authority.
At stake is whether Trump had the authority to fire Gwynne Wilcox , a member of the National Labor Relations Board , and Cathy A. Harris , the chair of the Merit Systems Protection Board .
Wilcox ’s firing by Trump in January prompted widespread outrage from labor unions, Democrats , and progressive advocates.
Many groups warned that the NLRB , which has open investigations into alleged labor law violations at companies with ties to the Trump administration, could be on the brink of losing its long-standing independence.
