'Be prepared': After recent avalanche fatalities in Rockies, experts and ski resorts urge caution in backcountry

71% Informative
Banff and Lake Louise ski resorts in the southern Canadian Rockies are urging visitors to avoid venturing into the backcountry.
The resorts say recent heavy snowfall and warmer temperatures have contributed to increased avalanche conditions this spring .
March is typically the month with the most snowfall in the Rockies , according to a spokesperson.
For groups that do ski in the backcountry, everyone in the group should have the right safety gear on hand.
Demontiegny said it’s important to know how to use the equipment in the event of a companion rescue.
“If you can get someone out in the first 15 minutes , they have a very high likelihood of survival,” he said.
