What to know about measles outbreaks and why they're happening

As of Thursday , Alberta has confirmed 14 cases of measles, two of which are reported in Calgary .
Ontario and Quebec have reported a rising number of cases, with the former reporting numbers well into the triple-digits.
The measles is caused by the measles virus, which is also known as the rubeola virus.
Unvaccinated young children and adults are susceptible to infection.
Since the 1970s , doctors relied on the vaccine to bring down the frequency of measles outbreaks in the population.
High vaccination rates among children in the ’90s led to a drop in infections and stronger immunity to the virus.
The target vaccination rate for a population is 95 per cent , but over the years , vaccination rates have fallen to 70 per cent and below.
