John McTernan said the Government was “foolishly and dangerously confusing the categories of long term sickness and disability’s benefits.

Government is believed to be looking at 6bn of welfare savings, with the vast majority ( 5bn ) from making it harder to qualify for personal independence payments.

Ministers are also considering a plan to freeze PIP payments next year .

Government has argued that it needs to reform welfare after the number of people receiving disability benefits soared by almost half a million in a year, to 4.8 million as of August .

Rebel MPs have warned the plans would “push disabled people further into poverty’ Rebels hope to persuade Reeves and Kendall to change their minds about the plans.
