Hearing problems are increasing among young people with auditory processing disorder ( APD ) The condition is neurological where the brain finds it difficult to understand sounds and words.

Sophie , 25 , from London , was diagnosed with APD after hearing tests came back normal.

Her audiologist believes the overuse of noise-cancelling headphones could have a part to play.

It is now common to see people walking outside wearing noise-cancelling headphones and watching videos online with subtitles.

61% of 18-24 year olds prefer to watch TV with the subtitles on.

Dr Angela Alexander , audiologist and owner of APD Support , is among the audiologists calling for more research.

Treatment for APD can make a significant difference with some patients able to make a full recovery.
