Freedom to Read: Calgary Public Library addresses book challenges and bans

Freedom to Read Week, observed from Feb. 23 to Mar. 1 , is a national celebration of the freedom to read and freedom to access information.
In 2024 , Canada saw 97 books challenged, which the library calls a “reminder of the continued act of censorship” CPL has launched Page , a stop-motion animated video showcasing the need to protect the right to access diverse perspectives and ideas.
In 1991 , an Afro-Canadian organization called PRUDE (Pride of Race, Unity and Dignity through Education) in Saint John , N.B. , sought to remove To Kill a Mockingbird from school reading lists.
A parent group in Halifax recommended the withdrawal of both Goosebumps and Fear Street book series by R.L. Stine .
