Ross Ulbricht created the Silk Road , the world’s first dark-web drug market, in 2011 .
He was convicted on seven charges relating to the distribution of narcotics, money laundering, and computer hacking.
In 2015 , he was sentenced to life in prison, a punishment beyond even the 20-plus years prosecutors in the case requested.
President Trump pardoned Ulbrachicht on Tuesday evening , misspelling his last name.
Ulbricht has become an exemplar of over-sentencing among some advocates of criminal justice reform.
He never fully acknowledged the harm inflicted by the Silk Road’s drug sales and still shows little remorse for his actions.
“ Ross has served more than enough time. He has been a model prisoner. He poses zero safety risk to the community,” Alice Johnson , CEO of the justice reform foundation Taking Action for Good said in November .
