Wildlife advocates say the proposed measures aren’t backed by science and are designed to appease the cattle industry.
Forestry Minister Todd Loewen says if a count finds the wild horse population has exceeded management thresholds, 30 would be selected for adoption.
The Help Alberta Wildies Society will be conducting a survey of wild horses in Alberta this year .
The group says injecting horses with contraception would further decrease their population.
The Society says the horses have natural predators like bears and cougars and injecting them with contraception will further decrease the population.
