SpaceX's new Starship mega-rocket was flying for the first time on its seventh flight on Thursday .

The rocket's booster fired its engines to lower itself to a catch tower, where a pair of giant "chopstick" arms closed around its trunk and caught it.

However, shortly after the epic booster catch, SpaceX said the upper stage of the system, Starship itself, was lost.
