The government of Canada has awarded what appears to be its last zero -emission vehicle rebate.

A chaotic weekend rush exhausted the remaining funding for the Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) program.

Transport Canada warned Jan. 10 that the rebate program was set to “pause” ahead of its original March 31 end point, telling dealers only about $70 million in funding remained.

Legislation passed last year requires ZEVs account for 20% of new-vehicle sales in model year 2026 , 60% in 2030 and 100% in 2035 .

Automakers face penalties of up to $20,000 per vehicle for failing to meet the targets or purchasing adequate offset credits.
