A new report from the U.S. surgeon general suggests that labels on alcoholic drinks should warn about cancer risk.
The association between alcohol and cancer is well established, and many doctors have long called on the federal government to make the connection clearer to the public.
As alcohol breaks down in the body, it can damage DNA and proteins in a way that allows cancer to develop.
The current U.S. dietary guidelines recommend no more than one drink per day for women and two for men.
The guidelines are set to be updated this year , so Murthy ’s suggestion that the alcohol limits be reassessed may factor into that process.
