•Advocates argue need for mental health emergency service
73% Informative
Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham has asked for the creation of an emergency service dedicated to mental health calls.
Other major cities are examining the benefits of an alternative model as they investigate police wellness checks that have led to fatalities.
A similar model is offered in parts of B.C. where teams of two workers respond to crisis calls without police.
In 1989 , Crisis Assistance Helping Out On The Streets , or CAHOOTS , was born.
The program operates 24 hours a day in Eugene and its sister city, Springfield .
Advocates say the biggest challenges these services face aren’t safety but precarious funding, a small pool of mental health workers to choose from.
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew said there are government initiatives to bolster mental health supports.
