Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek faced a citizen-attempted recall petition, slumping polling numbers, a catastrophic water main rupture and repeated tête-à-têtes with the Alberta government in 2024 .
Small business owner Landon Johnston submitted a notice of recall petition to the city, in an attempt to oust the mayor.
Johnston was the first to attempt a recall in Calgary , after the provincial government passed new legislation under former premier Jason Kenney that allowed citizens to remove elected officials from office if they obtained enough signatures.
Ultimately, the petition garnered just 69,000 unverified signatures.
Gondek announced her candidacy for re-election on Nov. 29 , pledging to regain public trust in the city and council.
She said the Bearspaw south feeder main failure was a lesson learned in how city hall needs to better communicate with the public.
Other tribulations include justifying council’s decision to approve contentious change to zoning laws in Calgary .
