•'Like election night': Annual Christmas Bird Count finds fewer of them flocking to Calgary
77% Informative
The 73rd annual Calgary Christmas Bird Count took place on Dec. 15 .
Preliminary results show a total of 40,867 birds were counted this year , 22 per cent lower than the 15-year average.
The most observed birds were Canada geese ( 13,800 ), mallards ( 9,700 ) and house sparrows ( 4,900 ) This year 's count included 70 species, on par with last year .
Wallace attributes consistent sightings of rare birds to Calgary ’s thriving birder community.
He hopes that by sharing the results more widely, he can encourage greater collaboration between the birding community and local decision-makers.
“The high quality of their birding skills allows us to maintain that high species count,” he said.
