Syrian rebel leader says women’s education will continue – but refuses to be drawn on alcohol

Ahmed al-Sharaa said he believed in education for women as he denied the new government would be another version of the Taliban .

The rebel leader led the lightning offensive that saw Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) overthrow Bashar al-Assad ’s autocratic regime less than two weeks ago .

He refused to answer whether the consumption of alcohol would be allowed when asked by the BBC .

HTS started life as a splinter group of al-Qaeda before breaking away in 2016 .

Turkey believes Syria ’s new rulers and Ankara -backed rebels “will liberate the regions occupied by the terrorist organisation PKK/YPGWashington said it had brokered an extension to a fragile ceasefire in Manbij .

But the defence ministry source insisted Ankara was not talking with the SDF , saying it was “out of the question for us to meet with any terrorist organisation”.
