Two new economic forecasts predict Alberta will lead the country in economic expansion next year .

But uncertainty surrounding the threat of U.S. tariffs hangs over the province as 2024 winds down.

One study estimates 52,000 fewer jobs created next year and Alberta entering a recession if the full brunt of American tariffs of 25 per cent are imposed on Canadian imports.

The bulk of the tariffs on energy would be paid by U.S. refiners and consumers through higher prices, says Parsons.

Parsons believes it’s unlikely Trump will place a levy on oil or gas, but if it occurs, it would widen the discount on western Canadian crude.

The RBC report said the tariff threat adds to downside risk for 2025 , but it believes a 25 per cent levy would have “too severe” of an economic effect.
