A 2018 report commissioned by Lions Bay , which was hit by a deadly landslide on Saturday , had recommended the community create natural hazard assessment areas for coastal, creek and slope hazards.

In 2018 , the council of the day decided not to proceed with the development permit areas.

It is not clear what may have happened since then or if the recommendations to better pinpoint the hazard facing the community were carried out.

The most common hazard reduction method is to build debris flow basins that are meant to capture soil, rocks, and organic material and prevent downstream damage.
