Sault Ste. Marie , Thunder Bay and Sudbury mayors say they need more immigrants to sustain local economies and population.
They say a one -size-fits-all approach to immigration policy doesn’t benefit northern regions.
In March , the federal government promised to create a permanent rural immigration program.
But months later , Ottawa said it would slash its immigration target for permanent residents.
“We are continuing to assess how immigration can best support the needs of rural areas,” a spokesman said.
Frédéric Boulanger , director of immigration programs and services at Collège Boréal , said immigrants are willing to resettle in areas with good employment prospects.
