The collapse of the Assad regime in Syria has set off a scramble for control of the heart of the Middle East .

The region’s recent history of uprisings and coups contains ominous reminders of the potential for instability when a strongman is overthrown.

The most immediate risk of violence lies in and around the Kurdish -controlled enclave in northeastern Syria , where around 900 U.S. troops are deployed.
