•Diego Garcia: Stranded mum's three-year ordeal on military island
80% Informative
Shanthi, not her real name, says they had paid $ 5,000 ( 3,900 ) in savings and given all of her gold jewellery to smugglers for an ambitious journey to Canada .
The family were stranded on the secret military island of Diego Garcia , home to a strategic UK - US military base.
They were finally sent to the UK this week in what the government described as a "one off" case in the interests of their welfare.
Shanthi and her family lived on Diego Garcia for three years in a refugee camp on the Chagos Islands .
The island has had no resident population since the 1970s when the UK evicted all the people living there so it could develop a strategic base.
The family has filed asylum claims in the UK in hopes of remaining.
The UK agreed earlier this year to hand over the island to Mauritius in historic move.
