A 41-year-old Chinese woman went to the hospital in June 2022 after feeling like she had something in her right eye.

Doctors reexamined her eye and found four live, white worms wriggling around under her upper eyelid.

Genetic testing revealed the worms belonged to a species called Thelazia callipaeda, otherwise known as the Oriental eye worm.

It is the main species responsible for causing a parasitic disease called thelaziasis.
