France 's Emmanuel Macron has praised workers for achieving the 'impossible' task of restoring Paris 's cathedral.

On Friday the world had a first look inside a resplendent new Notre-Dame as Macron conducted a televised tour to mark the cathedral's imminent re-opening.

In a speech to the craftsmen and women who worked on the refurbishment, Macron said: "You have been its remedy through will".

The re-opening of Notre-Dame is a much-needed boost for Macron 's political fortunes.

He has closely involved himself with the project, and visited the cathedral several times.

The only remaining point of contention is over a modern design for stained-glass windows in six side-chapels.
