Cost of reversing effects of climate change climbs nearly four-fold soon after a tipping point is crossed, study says.
Researchers say some tipping points have an "overshoot window" that grows linearly with time.
Findings could help identify early warning signals that climate change is drawing near.
"Imagine that we go down a high-emissions pathway, where the planet warms enough to melt all our sea ice by the end of the century ," says Parvathi Kooloth .
"We may need to dial emissions down much further, to levels predating 2024 ," she says.
