Nasal spray version of common diuretic has potential to help treat heart failure

A new nasal spray form of the medication bumetanide may reduce the tissue swelling caused by heart failure as effectively as the standard oral and intravenous versions of the drug.

Heart failure occurs when the heart does not pump blood as well as it should, resulting in decreased blood flow to organs and fluid buildup in the lungs.

The study included 68 healthy adults, ages 18 to 55 years old , who did not have heart failure or risk factors for developing heart failure at the time of enrollment.

Each participant received all three forms of bumetanide in a varied order.

Study participants were monitored on-site for 10 days .
