A type of lithium-ion battery called lithium iron phosphate, or LFP , is becoming increasingly prevalent in EVs around the world.

Manufacturers like Ford , Mercedes-Benz , Rivian , Tesla , and others are offering these packs as an alternative to, or an outright replacement for, the nickel manganese cobalt ( NMC ) and nickel cobalt aluminum oxide ( NCA ) chemistries that have dominated for years .

LFP batteries have a few key advantages, but for anyone who’s concerned about the environmental and ethical impact of EV ownership, they’ve now jumped to roughly 30 percent .

Mercedes-Benz selected LFP cells for its new eSprinter van.

Battery degradation is lower than other batteries, ensuring durability and low maintenance requirements.

Going forward, LFP is projected to continue to gain momentum.

An April report from BloombergNEF points to a continual increase in LFP production in China .
