•Labour plans Meloni-style migrant deals with Kurdistan and Vietnam
66% Informative
Yvette Cooper is expected to emulate Italy 's model of paying millions of pounds to countries in return for them doing more to stop small boat crossings.
She is in discussion with a number of governments, including Kurdistan , Turkey and Vietnam , with “co-operation and security” agreements expected to be concluded before the end of the year .
It comes just weeks after Sir Keir Starmer met Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni in Rome .
The deal is being resurrected and revamped by Cooper’s team, a source said.
Vietnam emerged earlier this year as the biggest single source of new migrants seeking to cross the Channel illegally in small boats.
In August ministers promised a large surge’ in returns flights for failed asylum seekers and others with no right to be in the UK .
Labour has removed 629 people on these planes and more flights are planned before the end of the year .
