Campaign groups Bloom and Foodwatch tested 148 cans of tuna from five European countries.

All tested positive for mercury contamination, but Europêche , representing fishing fleets, said it "strongly refutes" the claims.

The amount required to pose a health risk is higher than what is typically consumed.

The Food Standards Agency said it kept contaminants such as mercury under review.
