The Bearspaw Feeder Main broke in Calgary in June , sending thousands of litres of water flooding onto 16th Avenue N.W. on the evening of June 6 .

Early results from the investigation found high chloride levels in the soil at various locations was one reason for the main break.

Tiny cracks in the pipe’s cement lining — called the protective mortar outer layer — also played a factor, alongside wires which snapped due to corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement.
