The WC-135R Constant Phoenix " nuke sniffer " aircraft carries on a critical national security mission.

North Korea's Oct. 31 launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile — which violated U.N. Security Council resolutions — underscores the aircraft's global importance.

The planes are poised to fly into radioactive skies to gather nuclear debris samples.

"It is the only capability like this in the world," retired Air Force major general says.

The KC-135R Stratotanker debuted with the Air Force in 1964 and had most recently flown with the Arizona Air National Guard’s 161st Air Refueling Wing .

The Air Force's two legacy WC-135Ws retired to the boneyard, and their three modernized replacements arrived in Nebraska between July 2022 and December 2023 .
