The US Food and Drug Administration formally began the process of abandoning oral phenylephrine, a common over-the-counter decongestant that the agency concluded last year is not effective at relieving stuffy noses.

The FDA issued a proposed order Thursday to remove oral Phenylephrine from the list of drugs that drugmakers can include in OTC products.

For now, the order is just a proposal; the FDA will open up a public comment period.
