•California backlash hands defeat to progressive criminal justice reform

California voters brought back felony prosecutions for some drug and theft crimes, and replaced progressive reformer Democratic District Attorney George Gascón with a former Republican who ran as an independent.
The variances among Democratic voters are proof that liberal Californians are not monolithic.
Crime in particular is a local issue, says Mark Baldassare , survey director for the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California .
70% of California voters support tougher criminal penalties.
