Building strong bones in childhood is important.

It reduces the risk of osteoporosis and fractures in later life.

Researchers from the University of Southampton and University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust ( UHSFT ) launched the MAVIDOS study in 2009 .

They recruited over 1,000 women from Southampton , Oxford and Sheffield .

During their pregnancy, the women were randomly allocated to two groups.

One group took an extra 1,00 International Units per day of vitamin D.

The other took a placebo (dummy) tablet each day .

Results showed that bone mass was greater in children born to mothers who had had vitamin D supplementation.
