An elderly woman is dead and her son is in hospital after a townhouse fire in the southeast community of Lynnwood .
A man was awoken by the smoke alarm and when he went downstairs to investigate, he saw a fire growing in the kitchen.
Despite efforts to put it out the fire grew larger and he evacuated, but realized his mother had not evacuated.
When he tried to go inside to find her he was met with thick smoke, and was unable to do so.
Neighbours dialled 911 and told the fire department an elderly woman was still inside.
