Americans rank the economy and inflation as their top two issues in the November 5 election.
But perhaps even more important than current price levels is how voters in key states interpret inflation.
Pennsylvanians appear to be more sensitive to inflation than people in many other states, Oxford Economics economist Bernard Yaros says.
The "misery index" is an informal measure that looks at the sum of the nation's unemployment rate and inflation rate.
The index has accurately predicted the presidential outcome, Yaros says.
Yaros : "I don't think anyone can say for sure what way this is going to break".
