The federal government announced Thursday a plan to cut the projected number of permanent residents from 485,000 this year to 395,000 in 2025 .

In recent years , immigration to Calgary has soared, overtaking Toronto and Vancouver partly due to its reputation as one of the most affordable cities to live in.

In 2023 , the city's population grew by 5.9 per cent , or 96,000 people, the largest growth among Canada ’s major cities.

The influx of newcomers results “in the biggest strain on the settlement sector to provide the types of services that have been successful in helping these families transition into Canada ,” Ernst said.
