1,100 prisoners who were given sentences of more than five years will be released.

They will benefit from the next tranche of early prison releases that comes into effect on October 22 .

For the first time they will be freed after serving only 40 per cent of their sentences.

Also on Tuesday Shabana Mahmood , the justice secretary, will launch a major review of sentencing policy.

Aaquib Ali was given a ten-year prison sentence in December 2021 for operating a network supplying class A drugs in Birmingham and Warwickshire .

West Midlands police described him as the kingpin’ and a key player’ in the county lines network.

Police calculated that he had made the equivalent of 2,800 a night selling cocaine.

Ali is expected to be released in December 2025 after serving only four years .
