The University of Missouri is considered the birthplace of modern homecoming.
It all goes back to 1911 , when football coach Chester Brewer called for alumni to "come home" to see the Tigers play Kansas in Columbia .
Illinois ' first homecoming was celebrated as an overwhelming success, with the Daily Illini predicting other schools would follow the lead.
In 1909 , Baylor hosted a " Home-Coming " weekend that featured all the elements that remain important today .
An 82 -page university document was published in January 1910 .
Baylor wouldn't host another homecoming until 1915 , and it didn't become an annual tradition until the 1930s .
Northern Illinois hosted its homecoming football game in 1914 .
Missouri 's homecoming celebration is among the best in the country.
