Biden ’s mindset was shaped at a time when the nascent Israeli state was seen as being in immediate existential peril, says Rashid Khalidi , the Edward Said Professor Emeritus of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia University in New York .

He argues Biden 's approach to the current conflict was shaped by an outdated conception of the balance of state forces in the region.
