Experts say they may wield the upper hand in their standoff with port operators over wages and the use of automation.

The union is also pointing to record profits the shipping companies have made, in part because of shortages resulting from the pandemic, and to a more generous contract that West Coast dockworkers achieved last year .

Biden : “Now is not the time for ocean carriers to refuse to negotiate a fair wage for these essential workers while raking in record profits” The union’s opening offer in the talks was for a 77% pay raise over the six-year life of the contract.

On Monday evening , the alliance said it had increased its offer to 50% raises over six years .
