A new survey of parents found that most say doctors should talk to their patients about gun safety.
Only 51% of those surveyed report being asked by their health care providers about the presence of guns in their home.
Right now there are no federal regulations around doctors talking to patients about firearm safety.
A majority of parents would like to see firearm locks be distributed in hospitals.
There is no set, uniform way of talking about gun safety with patients, says Ladines-Lim .
"The people most at risk of firearm injury are firearm owners," says Barnhorst.
"We need more research," says Bond .
