Federal grant could ring death knell for coal for rural Arizona power co-ops

Arizona 's largest member-owned power cooperative plans to eliminate coal by 2028 .

Arizona Electric Power Cooperative will use $845 million in federal funds to build four large renewable energy projects.

AEPCO will eliminate coal from one of its turbine units by end of 2027 , transition the unit to natural gas and eventually reduce its use altogether.

AEPCO said it will use its New ERA money to build 800 megawatts of new renewable energy generation.

The projects will include three large solar fields that will produce a combined 730 megawatts .

The cooperative is also working on four new natural gas units meant to operate during cloudy days when the solar facilities can't deliver enough power.
