Actors union and women’s groups push Gavin Newsom to sign AI safety bill

SAG-AFTRA , NOW, and Fund Her have sent letters to California Governor Gavin Newsom urging him to approve the controversial AI safety bill SB 1047 .

The bill would require developers to test for and safeguard against AI -enabled disasters, like cyberattacks on critical infrastructure or bioweapon development.

Now and NOW cite grave warnings from people at the forefront of AI and discuss the technology’s potentially disproportionate impacts on vulnerable groups.

NOW, Fund Her , Google , Meta , and OpenAI have written letters opposing SB 1047 .

The bill would be the first US AI safety regulation with teeth.

It's unclear if the letters will be enough for the bill to overcome the powerful forces arrayed against it.

Y Combinator and Andreessen Horowitz are leading a full-court press to kill the bill.
