Scientists collect high-resolution images of the North Star's surface for 1st time

New images reveal previously unknown features of the North Star .

The CHARA Array on Mount Wilson , California , has created a new view of Polaris .

The North Star is a star known as a Cepheid variable that dimensens periodically.

It's part of a triple star system that orbits Polaris once every 30 years , and it's the brightest of its siblings.

The study was published on Aug. 20 in The Astrophysical Journal .

The rate at which the star rotates appears to suggest a 120-day radial velocity variation.

"We plan to continue imaging Polaris in the future," a co-author of the study said.
