The Democratic Republic of Congo accounts for nearly all of this year ’s recorded cases and more than 450 deaths.
Young people seem to be particularly badly affected by the mpox outbreak because of their less developed immune systems.
One way mpox is spread is through very close contact and children “are always playing together,” says Dr Pierre-Olivier Ngadjole .
The outbreak in eastern DR Congo is of a new strain of mpox called Clade 1b .
Last week , the Congolese government said it hoped that vaccines would start to arrive from the US and Japan soon.
Until then, the country does not have any vaccines despite being at the epicentre of the virus.
