A dozen Oklahoma school districts say they will not check students' immigration status if asked by the state’s education department.
The move is the latest in a series of controversial steps taken by Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters .
He announced last week that he planned to ask school administrators to calculate “the cost and burden” of illegal immigration.
“Those are not the words of leaders who should be trying to bring people together for the betterment of education in our state,” said Miller , the Bixby superintendent. “And I think people are just a little bit tired of all that.”.
